Carol Bernardo

President

Employer: Coordinator, Cooperative Work Experience Education & Internship Program | Cosumnes River College

Carol pursued her passion in education and counseling after twenty plus successful years in the field of retail. She held positions in senior management including being the first female promoted to General Manager of a major department store in the state of Florida and Senior Vice President of Merchandising for a major department store chain. Over the course of her experience in education, Carol was the Program Coordinator and Counselor for the WorkAbility III Program, serving students with disabilities, at Sacramento City College. Additionally, she worked for Elk Grove Adult and Community Education in the Elk Grove Unified School District where she held the positions of vocational assessment, learning disabilities evaluation and career planning services coordinator and as instructor of career development, job readiness and anger management. Carol is a trainer and facilitator for CA Adult Literacy Professional Development (CALPRO) on understanding and designing programs for adults with learning disabilities. During her tenure at Cosumnes, in addition to coordinating the Work Experience and Internship Program, Carol served on the Statewide Work-based Learning and Employment Services Committee and CHIIP Youth Transition Advisory Committee. She served as Chair of the Professional Development Committee and was appointed, by Governor Schwarzenegger, to serve on the Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. Carol earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from California State University, Sacramento and her Master of Arts Degree in Counseling from the University of San Francisco. Additionally, she is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Brook Oliver

Vice President/Marketing Director

Employer: Counselor/Career Connections Coordinator | Sierra College

A self-proclaimed “career geek”, Brook has been working in a variety of career and counseling settings over the past 20 years, including public, private, government and education agencies. She just completed her thirteenth year as a faculty member at Sierra College, coordinating the career, transfer and internship programs and teaching personal and career development classes. She is a California girl, raised just outside Sacramento, and attended Sierra College, then Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and finally Cal State East Bay where she earned her Master’s in Counseling with Higher Education and Career emphases. She served as co-chair of the Chancellor’s Statewide Advisory Committee on Career Development which is the team that built a number of career resources including CA Career Café and she has worked on statewide and local faculty issues serving as Senator and President of the Sierra College Academic Senate. Brook previously served on the CIWEA Board as Communication Chair and was part of the re-branding of the organization including logo and website development. Brook’s life goal is help everyone find their inner ‘career fairy’. She lives in Sacramento with her two daughters and the cat, Kayla. Family fun times include long road trips, walks at the river and lots and lots of laughter.

Kathrene Hansen Kin

Employer: Executive Director | Greater Los Angeles Federal Executive Board

Kathrene Hansen has 26 years of Federal government experience and currently works as the Executive Director for the Greater Los Angeles Federal Executive Board (FEB). The FEB brings together the 275 Federal offices in the Greater L.A. Area to collaborate on common issues. One of these important areas is human resource management, which includes succession planning. Kathrene is pleased to have joined the CIWEA Board as it is a great organization to help strengthen our relationships with area higher education institutions. Kathrene has a Masters in Public Administration from West Virginia University.

Sally Cardenas

Employer: Retired Internship Program Manager

Sally Cardenas is an experienced career consultant/advisor, internship program manager, association administrator, instructor and mentor with over 20 years of experience in higher education with a passionate focus on student professional development. Her broad background encompasses career professional development, internship program management, international education, non-profit management, and academic instruction in higher education. Sally is a recognized leader in California and at the national level in the field of internship program management, cooperative education and work-integrated learning.

Marilyn Ashlin

Membership Development & Engagement Director - North

Employer: Capital Region Pathway Senior Specialist | Foundation for California Community Colleges

Marilyn Ashlin is Capital Region Pathway Senior Specialist with the Foundation for California Community Colleges (FCCC). In this role she is responsible for college engagement in the Foundation’s career pathway and work-based learning workforce development initiatives. Prior to joining FCCC, Marilyn served as business services representative for the workforce investment boards of Solano and Contra Costa counties and was on the work experience faculties of Santa Rosa Junior College, College of Alameda, and Diablo Valley College. At Diablo Valley College Marilyn participated in a number of workforce development projects and served as interim coordinator of Cooperative Work Experience Education. Before entering the higher education and workforce development fields, Marilyn was a senior manager, trainer, and career development consultant in private industry. Marilyn received a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Master of Arts in Organizational Communication from Purdue University.

Rachael Brown

Membership Development & Engagement Director - South

Employer: Special Projects Coordinator/Work Based Learning | Mount San Antonio College

Rachael E. Brown began her career in the private sector as a Human Resources Generalist. As a Human Resources Generalist one of her major responsibilities was to coordinate, recruit, and oversee the student internship program at her company. She later joined the staff at Mount San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in 2012 as the Special Projects and Work Based Learning Coordinator. Rachael has been instrumental in establishing protocols and procedures for Occupational Work Experience at Mt. SAC including Title 5 compliance. She also conducts Title 5 training on campus for other job coordinators in various CTE divisions. Through her work, Rachael has effectively established a rapport with various constituents and serves as a liaison between faculty, students, and companies. Rachael has a BA degree in Sociology from University of Southern California (USC) and a Human Resources Management Certificate from CSU Long Beach.

Julie Collier

Employer: Professor of Work Experience and Internships | Folsom Lake College

Julie possesses 13 years of experience as a career development professional in higher education. The highlight of her work is facilitating individual career development, especially connecting job seekers with employers. She compares her role as the faculty coordinator of the Work Experience & Internship Program at Folsom Lake College to being the CEO/CFO of a small start-up. Previously, Julie coordinated the internship program for engineering and computer science students at the Sacramento State Career Center. Julie earned her Master of Science degree in Career Counseling from Sacramento State University.

Dawn Finley

Employer: Career Services Specialist | Mount San Antonio College

A Career Services professional with over 20 years experience in the delivery and administration of career development and placement services. Dawn possesses an extensive background in Workforce Development encompassing career counseling, training and recruitment. In her current role, Dawn coordinates the Work Experience program for Mt. SAC's Business Division, working with students, staff, and faculty. Dawn possesses a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of La Verne and a Master of Arts degree in Education from Cal Poly Pomona.

Theresa Hagelbarger

Employer: CTE Internship Coordinator | Santa Ana College

Theresa worked in the international business industry for fifteen years prior to entering the education field. In education, Theresa taught a multitude of high school business courses, most of which she developed and wrote course outlines and the curriculum. She developed and articulated courses with local community colleges bridging the gap to college for her students. Her passion in education continues to be to help students build career pathways using education to reach their career goals. In her current position as CTE Internship Coordinator, Theresa developed and launched the new program at Santa Ana College. Theresa joined CIWEA to work with the board to help build and grow the internship and work experience programs across the state of California. Theresa has a Management Degree from Santa Ana College and Bachelor's in Career Technical Studies from Cal State Universality San Bernardino and is pursuing her MBA. She also holds a Designated Subject Credential in Business from Cal State University Long Beach.

Christy Jewell

Christy has worked for William Jessup since 2004 where she shared responsibility for raising support for student scholarships, communications and community outreach for the University for seven years, and has led the University’s career development efforts since 2011. She now enjoys combining her community relations efforts with support of local businesses and organizations to find quality interns and employees to mutually benefit economic and career development in the South Placer and Sacramento region. Prior to moving to northern California in 2003, Christy served for several years as a School-to-Career Coordinator for Ventura County, with extensive experience in developing partnerships between business, education and the community. She has a strong commitment to workforce and economic development and believes that education is uniquely poised to supply the needs to businesses in the region. Christy completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology at Westmont College, and is a certified Career Development Facilitator.

Matthew Weis

Matthew Weis possesses over ten years of experience in the facilitation and management of educational and vocational programs and a strong passion for service and community.
Matthew currently serves as the Work Based learning Program Coordinator at Cabrillo College. Previously, Matthew worked many years with Outward Bound providing and expanding community based experiential education and leadership development programs in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and San Francisco. Along with his time working with various student populations, Matthew coordinated vocational programming and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities in Santa Cruz County.
